Merrick, NY—While engagement and wedding band trends are evolutionary, wedding gown trends track a little closer to fashion runways. Jewelers hoping to sell more wedding-day jewelry for the bride therefore need to know what’s coming down the proverbial aisle--or in this case, catwalk--for bridal gown trends. Gown manufacturers and designers begin introducing their new collections a year or more in advance of the season they're planning for, so here, according to Fashionista.com, are the biggest bridal gown trends for 2017. We've included some jewelry ideas to get you started, too.
Pink is the number-one non-white bridal gown color, outpacing blue and lilac. Blush pearls add a traditional element to this nontraditional style, or for the ultra-modern bride, try pink tourmalines, sapphires, Morganite, et cetera. A non-traditional pink gown can be balanced out by classic pearl jewelry such as these Dancing Diamond collection 10 x 11 mm pink freshwater pearl and diamond pendant necklace and earrings from Tara Pearls. A more bohemian bride might opt for something like this long necklace of pearls by Arman Sarkisyan, below:
Deep, plunging V-necks. Whether truly bare or discreetly placed behind tulle illusion, the V silhouette calls for necklaces that fill in the blanks. Try a Y or lariat with diamonds or pearls.
Capes. The look is transitioning from street to bridal in lace.

See-through. Whether a few modest peek-a-boo cutouts or a full-on sheer dress with only the essential parts hidden behind strategically placed lace, it’s the J. Lo phenomenon gone bridal.

Trains and veils. Veils especially will be embellished with lace, embroidery, beading, and even Swarovski crystals. Brides can balance it with simple jewelry or just decide that more is more and pile on big diamond earrings, rings, and bracelets.

Lingerie inspirations. Whether corset/bustier or a wisp of a slip dress, what’s normally under is on view this season. Slip dresses still look best with diamond or pearl studs and minimal jewelry, just like Carolyn Bessette Kennedy wore 20 years ago when she immortalized the look in her Narciso Rodriguez gown. More structured corset styles can take more important jewelry; here, go for a statement collar necklace rather than something long.

A strong corset gown can take strong jewelry, such as these pieces by Jye's, left. Right: Norman Silverman's oval diamond studs accented with round diamonds make a statement but still are simple enough not to overpower a slipdress.
Hippie redux. The music festival boho chic aesthetic of Coachella gets translated into lace wedding gowns that are less formal than lace usually is. Boho gowns call for less traditional jewelry; think long layered necklaces, textured metals, and rough or unusual stone cuts.

Off the shoulder. The peasant blouse goes bridal in lace and tulle. Since the emphasis is on the décolleté, don’t confuse the issue with necklaces. Stick to statement earrings (such as the ones shown with the blush pink Naeem Khan gown, above) and go.

Ancillary events. Between destination weddings and others that turn into an all-weekend affair, the bride needs lots of outfits besides the all-important gown—and she needs jewelry to go with them. Think about what she would wear with everything from a simple shift dress for rehearsal to a jumpsuit for the after-party to white jeans for the morning-after brunch.
