Swiss Gemmological Institute SSEF Mourns Loss of its Former Director, Henry A. Hänni January 13, 2025 (0 comments)
Basel, Switzerland--Prof. Henry A. Hänni, former director of the Swiss Gemmological Institute SSEF, died peacefully at his home in Basel on January 9, surrounded by his family, the Swiss gemological institute said in a statement. What follows is a the remainder of the statement mildly unedited.
Professor Hänni, whose remarkable career spanned over four decades, was a pioneering figure in the field of gemology. His journey began as a technical assistant at the Mineralogical Institute of the University of Basel, where his fascination with minerals led him to pursue advanced studies, culminating in a PhD in 1980, with his doctoral thesis focusing on beryl from the Swiss Alps.
In 1990, Professor Hänni assumed the role of Director at SSEF, where he made invaluable contributions to the institute's development and international reputation. His groundbreaking research in pearl and colored stone analysis, treatment detection and origin determination has left an indelible mark on the field of gemology. Even after his retirement in 2009, Professor Hänni remained actively engaged in gemstone research and education. As a Professor of Gemology at the University of Basel since 1996, he inspired countless students and professionals worldwide through his teaching and mentorship, sharing not only his vast knowledge but also his infectious enthusiasm for the field.
“Professor Hänni will be remembered not only for his extraordinary academic achievements but for his unique sense of curiosity,” said Dr. Michael S. Krzemnicki, director of SSEF. “His warm personality and distinctive sense of humor touched all who knew him, making him not just a respected colleague but a beloved friend to many in the international gemological community.”
His passing represents a significant loss to the global gemological community, but his legacy will continue to influence and inspire future generations of gemmologists.
