Tiffany & Co. Purchases Titanic Pocket Watch for Record $1.9 Million December 27, 2024 (0 comments)
London, UK--Tiffany & Co. has confirmed its $1.97 million purchase of a historic gold pocket watch, setting a new record for Titanic memorabilia. The watch, sold last month by UK auction house Henry Aldridge & Son Ltd., was created by Tiffany in 1912 and gifted to Captain Arthur H. Rostron, who led the rescue of over 700 Titanic survivors.

According to Diamond World, the watch was inscribed by three Titanic survivors—Mrs. George D. Widener, Mrs. John B. Thayer, and Mrs. John Jacob Astor—as a gesture of gratitude for Captain Rostron’s efforts aboard the R.M.S. Carpathia on April 15, 1912. Tiffany's records confirm that Mrs. Widener originally purchased the watch.
The acquisition surpasses the previous record for Titanic memorabilia, a pocket watch sold for $1.485 million earlier this year. Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge noted that the repeated breaking of records for Titanic artifacts highlights increasing demand amid a diminishing supply.
Tiffany’s acquisition links the watch back to its origins while preserving a key piece of Titanic history.
