TRENDSPOTTING: HERE’S WHAT YOUR CUSTOMERS ARE SEEING NOW!October 05, 2011 (0 comments)
|Merrick, NY--Sure, it's important to know what fashion trends are going to be on deck for the next season so you have time to plan your merchandising accordingly. But don't lose sight of what's happening right now: it's when customers curl up with a fashion magazine or go style surfing online that they say "That's what I want!" And what they want, you will want to have.
But fall is a very busy time for jewelers, so in the spirit of "we read it so you don't have to," here, literally ripped from the pages of some current fashion publications, is a capsule look at some trends your customers are seeing--and that The Centurion thinks they will be wanting to buy themselves. (Editor's note: the watch pictured at left is a collaboration between Timex and Versace. High/low comes to the watch counter!)
First, a look at a trend we think's a winner:
This page from October InStyle, above, shows a selection of drop earrings featuring elongated teardrop-shape gemstones. It's a style that's versatile for day or night, works on a variety of face shapes, and is easy to wear. Below, some real-life examples:
The "sticks and stones" collection from Alex Sepkus, left, works the trend. This pair features 18k gold, natural color diamond, and boulder opal. Center, Sethi Couture's earrings from her Natural Beauty collection bring the drop a little higher on the ear, while the Gumuchian earrings at right use the teardrop shape in multiples.
Next, in the "who knew?" department, Elle this month featured a shoot of very ladylike clothes--a key fall trend--but one in which every photo (two are shown here) featured the model wearing a brooch. Maybe not a category you'd fill a case with, but for sure it's worth having a few on hand!
Finally, in the fashion press, bloggers are becoming an influential force to be reckoned with. Their views often shape trends--or at least inspire a mad dash to the nearest mall. But when a major mass cosmetics brand like Cover Girl decides to build a four-page fall advertising campaign in Vogue around fashion bloggers, it's time to sit up and take notice. In this case, we clearly have four jewelry lovers--to the point where the lipstick is almost an afterthought. Maybe not quite what CG maker Procter & Gamble had in mind, but we love it!
Gotta love those fashion bloggers! Top left, Blair Eadie piles on the baubles, bangles, and beads--and watches, chains, and monograms too. Top right, Karen Blanchard knows how to rock a serious gemstone cocktail ring or two. Below left, Tess Pare-Mayer goes for the armload of bracelets, neck armor, and some heavy gem action, proving that yes, even though the photo is too small to see here, real women do wear those funny oblong two-finger rings. Finally, below right, Beth Jones knows killer earrings are all one needs to dress up fucshia and sequins. Click on each page to read each woman's blog.
