Per a CBS News report, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office said 20-year-old Devin Johnson and another man obtained several luxury items from Victoria Jewelry on Temple Place in Downtown Crossing in April. The purchases included a rose gold and diamond bracelet valued at $15,000, a rose gold and diamond chain worth $50,000, two Rolex watches priced at $45,000 and $23,000, and a gold and diamond tennis chain worth $30,000.
The report added that the men arranged the purchase after one of them contacted a store employee through Instagram and text messages. The pair paid in cash, but two days later, store employees discovered the money was fake. Detectives said the bills carried the phrase "In Prop We Trust" and resembled currency used in film productions or as toys.
Investigators identified the suspects through video surveillance and tracked social media accounts showing them posing with jewelry identical to the stolen pieces. In one post, prosecutors said, the second man displayed a watch and tagged Johnson with the caption, "We made history bro."
Johnson was arraigned on July 22 on one count of larceny over $1,200. He was released on personal recognizance and ordered to stay away from Victoria Jewelry. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for September 23. The second suspect has not yet been arraigned.
“These suspects, like so many others, may have thought they got away with something. Like so many others, they thought wrong,” Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a statement.
