Compress Your Images To Improve Your Site’s SEO |  September 10, 2023 (0 comments)

Merrick, NY -- I find that the biggest reason websites are slow is because they use graphics with enormous file sizes on their website. The more stuff that your website has to load for the visitor, the longer it will take for the page to load.

Nowadays it's a little easier than it used to be because many graphics are already properly downsized for the web.

However, if you still have some speed issues on your site, here's how to check it and fix your graphics.

1. Scan your site for speed

First, use a website like GTMetrix or PageSpeed Insights to check your website's speed. Not only will they tell you the site speed, but it will also tell you what reasons are causing the slow speeds. You may find large graphic files as a top issue.

2. Make sure you upload graphics as a WebP file type

Every website in the world should be saving and uploading their graphic files as WebP graphics. They're graphics made specifically to load fast on websites.

As Google's info page says, "WebP is a raster graphics file format developed by Google intended as a replacement for JPEG, PNG, and GIF file formats. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, as well as animation and alpha transparency."

If your files are still uploaded as jpegs or pngs, it's time to fix it.

3. Use plugins to automatically lighten your graphic file sizes

There are many plugins (especially for Wordpress) that will automatically fix your graphics for you upon upload. One of these is called Smush (this is the one I like). This is great when I have a quick graphic I want to upload -  Smush will automatically downsize the image for me.
