Tumblr Being Sold To Wordpress
August 13, 2019 (0 comments)
There was a time when the short-form blogging site Tumblr had the same type of hype as Facebook and Twitter. However, it's been dead for quite some time now, and is now being sold by Verizon to Automattic - the owners of the popular Wordpress website platform.
It's going to be interesting to see if / how Automattic ties Tumblr into their Wordpress website software. Tumblr claims to host 475 million self-published blogs. However, that's really the end of the similarities between the two. Tumblr declined in popularity and stayed as a quick posting tool. Wordpress, however, has become the most powerful website platform on the planet.
So what's the play? Is Automattic going to try to migrate Tumblr users over to Wordpress? Will they look for new monetization opportunities? Automattic is expected to keep on most of the 200 employees at Tumblr, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Interesting fact: Tumblr sold for $1.1 billion in 2013. On Monday it was bought by Automattic for just $3 million.
