Green Bay, WI--As Jack Palance and Billy Crystal are riding along on horseback in the movie City Slickers, Jack’s character asks Billy “Do you know what the secret of life is?” He holds up his one finger and says, “One thing.” Billy asks what that one thing is and Jack replies “That’s what you gotta figure out.”

In our weekly training series, I often tell sales staff to pay attention to several metrics such as average retail, turnovers, team selling, outreach goals and whatever your particular store wants to do to improve. Metrics that are measured and reacted to often improve. But the metric I’ll challenge you to think about today and perhaps share with your team is this: What ONE THING can we look at each day and feel great about that’s at the heart of your store? If we paid attention to no other metrics and all issues could be solved by only paying attention to one single number, what would that be? Would it be the number of people you’ve made a real connection with that day? Top line sales? New customers that made a first-time purchase?

Often, we can get bogged down in details that take our team’s focus off the one real true metric or activity that really makes sales happen, and that’s connections and relationships. What is the one single thing you can tell your people, or anyone, what makes for a successful day working at your jewelry store?
