Sales Strategy
Jimmy DeGroot: My Phone Number is 867-5309 June 13, 2024 (0 comments)
Green Bay, WI--I was standing behind a young woman at the shoe store in Appleton and as she approached, she was asked her phone number by the checkout clerk. I was standing right there, a middle-aged man within close earshot of a young lady as she told the clerk her phone number. What’s wrong with this picture? I’ll tell you I sure felt awkward standing there.
When we’re at the point of the sale when it’s time to start entering customer info into the computer, how do we do it? Maybe we know Melinda’s first name, but not her last. Or we know their full name but there is three women named Melinda Jacobsen in the computer. I’ve found that having the customer fill out a customer info form always works best and guarantees you get the most accurate info without encroaching on their privacy. This form can simply be a half sheet of paper with your logo and labeled, “J Gerard Jewelers VIP Customer” or whichever label you wish. This form includes all the information we need and want such as preferred method of contact, mobile phone number and important dates such as anniversaries and birthdays.
They either know and love you already or you’ve done a great job of building a relationship, so when it’s time to check out, they now want you to have this information. In the case of existing good customers, I still always hand them my form and ask if there’s any updated information we need, so I don’t end up with three Melinda Jacobsens in my database.
For independent jewelers, accurate information is key to survival. Don’t put your customer in an awkward situation where they’re verbally giving you private info across the jewelry counter.
