Natural Diamond Council Launches ‘Diamonds of Canada’ Report September 26, 2024 (0 comments)
New York, NY--Natural Diamond Council (NDC) launched the Diamonds of Canada report, the first in a series of comprehensive studies aimed at “highlighting the pivotal impact of diamond producing regions, as well as dedicated reports to diamond trends and diamond facts backed with the latest data.
Most of Canada’s gems come from the Northwest Territories (NWT) where the NDC says the diamond industry partners with local and Indigenous communities to ensure regional economic benefits, environmental care, and a lasting positive legacy.
“These ancient treasures are not just one-of-a-kind, they’re a symbol of innovation, collaboration, and a sparkling commitment to sustainability. Today, Canada has grown to supply 14% of the world’s diamonds,” NDC said in a statement.
Highlights of the “Diamonds of Canada” report include:
- Canada’s Prominent Position with focus on Northwest Territories: The report underscores Canada’s rise to world’s third-largest diamond-producing country since its first mine opened in 1998, shedding light on its significant contribution to the global diamond market with diamonds in this region dating back 3.5 billion years. The report features in-depth looks at the region's mines including Diavik, Ekati, and Gahcho Kué.
- Community Impact with Social and Economic Benefits: Diamond mines in the area account for 52% of the Government of NWT’s revenues, with many crediting the natural diamond industry with “allowing people to stay in the north, raise a family and contribute,” said Galeen MacPherson, Women in Mining president at Rio Tinto's Diavik diamond mine.
- Environmental Stewardship: An examination of the environmental protection the diamond industry provides to the area. Diavik diamond mine is home to Northern Canada’s largest off-grid solar plant, showcasing renewable energy is possible in the subarctic.
NDC says it is committed to sharing education and transparency throughout the natural diamond industry. These reports will serve as additional assets to complement NDC’s Education Program giving retailers and consumers the information they need right at their fingertips.
