Peru’s President Embroiled in ‘Rolexgate’ Scandal April 03, 2024 (0 comments)
Lima, Peru--Armed police officers raided he house of Peru’s President Dina Boluarte, at least six of her cabinet ministers have resigned, and there are growing calls for her prosecution and resignation over what is being called in some circles as “Rolexgate.”
According to numerous reports, the scandal erupted when Boluarte was shown on Peruvian television wearing a Rolex watch. She has also been seen on other occasions wearing Rolex watches, according to the reports.
The investigation reportedly first focused on three luxury watches. Prosecutors reportedly discovered documents linking Boluarte to a Rolex Datejust 36, which starts at $15,000. Boluarte reportedly admitted to owning at least one Rolex watch.
More recently, the investigation has expanded to include jewels estimated to be worth more than $500,000, according to reports. One of the items is reportedly a Cartier bracelet.
Boluarte is allegedly being charged of not filling out an obligatory asset declaration form for her luxury goods, and thus being allegedly accused of using her position to enrich herself.
