Refinery 29: 7 Engagement Ring Trends That Will Be Big In 2022 January 05, 2022 (0 comments)
New York, NY—Refinery 29, a fashion and lifestyle website geared to Millennial-age women, recently posted an article listing seven engagement ring trends fthat will be big in 2022. Image: Solitaire ring by CrownRing.
Shelley Brown, senior fashion and beauty editor of bridal site The Knot, told R29, “Shape and setting are still the most important ring features, while [carat] size has actually become less important.” Though Brown says that diamonds remain the most popular stone, and round the most popular cut, there are less-expected design details that will garner attention — such as yellow gold settings, oval cuts, and lab-grown stones — this year.
Noticeably absent from R29’s seven trends are halo settings, vintage design, milgrain and pavé accents, and other design standards of recent times. The examples shown by R29 are still delicate, but generally more minimalist than we’ve been used to seeing. It’s also interesting to note that while the trends they list might feel new to consumers, they’re not news at all to the jewelry industry, a reminder that what you see and what customer see aren’t always the same thing.
Here are the top seven trends Refinery29 identifies for engagement rings this year:
- Oval-cut diamonds. This has been happening for a while, but look for ovals in non-solitaire and east-west settings now.
- Bezel settings. Always a modern-looking option, and always good for people who are hard on their jewelry.
- Three-stone rings. Thanks to Paris Hilton, this trend moves away from anniversary gifting to engagement.

- Two-stone rings. Also called “toi et moi,” the style has been around for centuries. Forevermark kicked off its latest resurgence a few years ago with its “Ever Us” collection.
- Yellow diamonds. A good value for someone who wants to get into fancy color diamonds.
- Ethically sourced rings. How the R29 article presents it shows just how much the lab-grown diamond sector owns the ethical and eco-conscious narrative. Though the article also mentions recycled and other previously-owned diamonds as part of the trend, it focuses on lab-grown as the preferred choice among eco-conscious consumers.
- Non-diamond engagement rings. Still a small sector of the market, but growing. Moissanite is the number-one alternative and sapphire is number two, says R29.
