Some Things You Shouldn’t Share On Social Media, Even For MarketingSeptember 09, 2015 (0 comments)
|Merrick, NY—Let’s face it, Facebook hasn’t always been known for it’s strict privacy policies. Users have long been subjected to changing policies and sometimes hard-to-find settings.
In these days of rampant identity theft, these factors do not seem likely to change. While Facebook is an extremely useful marketing tool for luxury jewelers, it’s essential to do a regular check to make sure your settings—both for your personal and professional pages—are where they should be so that you are protected.
Consumer Reports published a study with recommendation on this subject. First and foremost, especially for jewelers, is to tone down talking about those travel plans and think twice about posting your location status.
What’s a better choice? Share all that wonderful information after your trip, not during it.
You should also be very aware of your privacy settings. Know who can see your posts and what information is public. Click on the little lock in the top right hand corner of your personal Facebook page (it’s not lit up, but click it anyway) to find privacy shortcuts. Then click “Who can see my stuff,” then “View as.” Make sure you are comfortable with what you find.
One area that people often miss is location services. If you are a parent, you likely already have these turned off on your phone. If you don’t have them turned off, you are likely uploading your exact location where a photo was taken onto Facebook. If you are traveling and not updating in real time, that may not be an issue. But if you have a number of photos taken at home, you may want to avoid this by adjusting your phone settings.
Internet wizard Kim Komando has published Five Details You Shouldn’t Share With Facebook. They include phone number, home address, anything work related, your relationship status and your payment information. Along with the specifics on each topic, she also shows you how to make sure some of your friends don’t see all your photos.
It’s easy to forget that we need to be discreet on the Internet, especially as people working in a high-risk business. When you see all your friends sharing, you want to share too. But just as you are careful in real life, be careful when online. Double check all your privacy settings and stay vigilant!
