New York, NY—Uber-stylist Micaela Erlanger was named as a 2014 Power Stylist by Hollywood Reporter magazine. Among the highly sought-after red carpet clients she’s dressed are Michelle Dockery of Downton Abbey fame, actress Olivia Munn, and her famous Prada dress pick for Lupita Nyong’o launched the actress from unknown to being the face of Miu Miu, Prada’s diffusion line. (Of course, winning an Oscar for her role in 12 Years A Slave didn’t hurt either.)

Erlanger most recently dressed actress Jaime King in Forevermark diamonds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art Gala, one of the top events of the New York City social calendar. In an exclusive Q&A with The Centurion, Erlanger shares her ideas about choosing the right jewelry every time, what pieces every woman must own, and what the ultimate “don’t” is for wearing jewelry.

The Centurion: What do you look for first when choosing jewelry for a celebrity to wear?  Is it based on what she’s wearing, based on her particular face and style, or what?

Micaela Erlanger: Jewelry is like the icing on a cake. it is the final touch and the detail that brings a look together. I always think of jewelry in the context of how it will be best complement the look we have chosen.

Centurion: What is different for red-carpet jewelry vs. what a woman would wear to a local fancy event? Do you need to take visibility on camera into account, whereas a non-celebrity woman wouldn’t?

ME: Size and comfort are things that I take into consideration. How does it read with the overall look? Is it too big/ too small? How does the jewelry hang or lie on the body? It all has to be perfect.

Centurion: What are the inherent style advantages of diamonds, pearls, or colored gems?

ME: I love a sparkle but its impossible to say one has advantage over the other. It simply depends on the outfit and occasion!

Centurion: In your opinion, what are the most important jewelry style trends right now?

ME: I am loving ear cuffs and ear climbers. Modern with just a bit of edge!

Centurion: In your opinion as a stylist, what are the five most important pieces of jewelry for a woman to own?

ME: Diamond studs and the rest are nice to have!

Centurion: After the five most important pieces, what are five more “nice to have” pieces?

ME: Pearl studs, a gold bangle, a cocktail ring, a watch, and a pinky ring.

Centurion: How much jewelry should a woman wear at one time?

ME: My rule of thumb is to choose one thing around the face. Personally, I think it’s about balance, so I’ll do a bracelet on one arm and stack a couple of rings on the other.

Centurion: What is the biggest jewelry “don’t” that women should know?

ME: Wearing a necklace with chandelier earrings is the biggest “don’t” in my book. Pick one focal point and it will shine!

The Dress That Launched A Thousand Magazine Impressions: stylist Micaela Erlanger was responsible for putting together this famous Prada ensemble and jewelry for actress Lupita Nyong'o on the night she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 12 Years A Slave.
