New York, NY—In an exclusive video interview with The Centurion, renowned celebrity and television stylist Tod Hallman talks about the shift in how fashion-savvy consumers wear their jewelry. Hallman, who will be styling the photo shoot for the American Gem Trade Association’s annual Spectrum Awards, says today’s trend news is less about the trends themselves than about how to make them your own.

“It used to be that everything was trend-driven, but today it’s all about individuality,” he says. Even fabric defies trends, as former winter-only materials like leather are now often used in summer collections. Likewise, the old rules about pairing delicate jewelry with delicate clothing and bold jewelry with heavier fabric are gone: Hallman loves the juxtaposition of bold statement jewelry with a wisp of a dress.

Gone also are the days of what Hallman terms “vault jewelry.” Today it’s about getting up, getting dressed, and putting on jewelry that will go from daybreak to dinner without pause. And it shouldn’t look too precious, either—it should (of course) just look fabulous.

Finally, for jewelers who are participating in local fashion shows, be it for charity or any other purpose: if you’re supplying merchandise for the runway, go bold!

“Everybody can get up and get dressed in the morning. But this is editorial, so you want to give a different viewpoint. We live in an age of media and everyone’s attention is all over. You want to give them something fun and fabulous to play with.
