Exclusive Video: Dispelling Platinum Myth #4, That It’s Hard To Work With September 13, 2017 (1 comment)

New York, NY--Is platinum a hard metal to work with at the bench? Absolutely not, although bench jewelers who work in stores that do not carry platinum, and who as a result may not feel comfortable working with it, have perpetuated this myth.

Platinum's melting point is much higher than gold, thus requiring specific equipment and a slightly different skillset to work with the metal. So if a bench jeweler does not have the proper tools to work with platinum jewelry, chances are the store will avoid offering platinum to its consumers. But this is an educational opportunity for bench jewelers to ensure your store is delivering a premier product to your customers.

There are great technical educational resources available to bench jewelers (visit www.platinumlearning.com). Once a bench jeweler is comfortable and confident in working with platinum, most agree that it is the preferred material to work with because of its malleability. My understanding is that the platinum the jeweler works with is most forgiving for creating jewelry due to the high content of the precious metal to any alloy used in the fine jewelry mix of metals. Plus, laser welding options make fine tuning repairs, sizing, and jewelry fabrication less of a challenge.
You can not be a professional jeweler if you can’t work or sell platinum. You must be ready to give the customer the jewelry they want. Gold is great, but you do not want to say “no"to the platinum customer.
