Jimmy DeGroot: An exercise in hearing your staff July 22, 2024 (0 comments)

Green Bay, WI--Sounds kind of crazy, doesn’t it? Why would your staff need to be heard? Well, we’re retailers and that means it’s difficult to find great people to work in our stores and we want to do everything in our power to help them grow in their profession and feel appreciated. So, my buddy Kyle Bullock threw this out in a recent management training video for leaders to allow their staff to be heard.

Hold a staff meeting where they can give you the answers to the following three questions:

1. What piece or line of inventory in the store do you not care for and why? What don’t you like in the showcases?

2. What piece or line of inventory in the store do you love and why? And finally,

3. In the past week at the store, what has been your greatest success?

Then, if you’re bold enough, collect their answers on paper and analyze those answers. Then send them to me at jimmy@trainretail.com along with what you’ve gotten out of this little inquiry. I don’t want to give away the ending here because you write it yourself. I’m really interested to know both what the team says and what you, as a leader, learned from this little exercise. Next week we’ll go over a few of the replies (of course not revealing names) and we’ll just see how this can affect your store for the better.
