Merrick, NY—Nothing like finding buried treasure, especially if it’s a cherished family heirloom thought lost for all time.

A Facebook page/group titled “40 Bags in 40 Days,” originally designed to inspire readers to get rid of 40 bags of household clutter during the 40 days of Lent, has grown into a year-round community of people interested in decluttering. Occasionally members will post a story of a cherished piece of jewelry they found in the process of cleaning up. Here (with poster name hidden) is the page’s latest tale of an heirloom engagement ring that made a reappearance four years after being lost.

Moral of the story? Never, ever throw away a jewelry box without first opening it up!

This post on 40 Bags in 40 Days details a woman's happy discovery of her lost engagement ring. Another astute poster (below) noticed a missing prong and wisely advised a visit to a jeweler. (All posts have names removed for privacy.)
