A Facebook post by Molinelli's Jewelers states that the residents were scammed by people posing as immigrants in places such as casinos, gas stations, and parking lots.
As per the post, the scammers say that they are stranded and urgently need gas money, for which they'd be willing to trade jewelry in exchange for cash. They then proceed to persuade other victims to buy their fake jewelry.
"There is a family (well organized and extremely good at acting) that has been frequenting gas stations, casinos, and parking lots posing as immigrants who are in need of gas and assistance," the post said. "In exchange for money, they are offering "family heirlooms and riches" of stamped 18k goods. These goods are fake and should not be purchased!"
Warning people of the incident, Molinelli's said that gold was easy to dilute and that someone willing to trade so much gold for gas money was probably running a scam.
