Merrick, NY—The luxury jewelry industry kicked off 2016 with big news, both good and sad. Here is a recap:

2015 holiday sales came in with mixed results, though total sales for the year were solid for upscale jewelers. The infamous female robber terrorizing jewelers in the South was caught, the result of nationwide publicity efforts and a reward from the Jewelers’ Security Alliance. After months of steady declines, diamond prices suddenly reversed and gained some traction the last two months, but De Beers CEO Philippe Mellier warned the industry that more diamond price volatility is ahead for 2016. Gem veteran, journalist, and sustainability expert Barbara Wheat was tapped to head Natural Color Diamond Association (NCDIA), replacing Gino DiGeso, while Jean-Marc Lieberherr stepped down from his role at Rio Tinto Diamonds. And finally, sadly, the designer and luxury jewelry industry bid a tearful goodbye to two legendary entrepreneurs, Robyn Lewis and Cindy Edelstein.
