Merrick, NY—In our ongoing series titled One Great Thing I Did Last Year (That You Can Do This Year)," The Centurion asks retailers to tell us about one outstanding thing they did in 2014 that turned out really well. This week, Helena Vinhas of Vinhas Jewelers Inc. in Newark, NJ, shares her insight.

“One great thing thing I did last year and continue to grow this year is social media,” said Vinhas. “The power of Facebook and Instagram is amazing.” The store has a robust presence on Facebook and also on Instagram, where her account boasts 1,124 followers with 522 posts.

“Our sales continue to grow just with our daily or bi-weekly posts of jewelry, new collections and fresh ideas. We are taking votes from our fans,” said Vinhas. “We actually sold an H. Weiss award-winning cuff from a picture I took and posted while attending Centurion. I loved this sale!”

Vinhas has embraced social media and sees how it better connects her to her customers. “It makes our life so much easier when a loved one comes in with a saved picture from one of our posts and says I'll take it! I have also learned society loves posts of actual people showing their personalities. When that happens, they become fans of our store.”

As of today, Vinhas Jewelers has 4774 friends on Facebook, which she reached organically, with no advertising. Her objective? “Trying to reach a personal goal of qualified 10,000 friends on Facebook by the end of this year.” At this rate, it may not take that long!
